Pakistan is far easier to travel than its reputation suggests, but a few practical things are worth sorting before you fly.
Visas
Most nationalities apply through the online e-visa system. A tourist visa usually needs a hotel booking or a letter of invitation from a registered tour operator — we issue this for every guest at no cost.
Apply at least three weeks ahead. Processing is usually faster, but it is not worth the stress.
Money
Pakistan is largely a cash economy outside big-city hotels. ATMs work in Islamabad, Lahore, Gilgit and Skardu but can be unreliable in smaller towns, so draw before heading into the valleys.
Bring clean, newer notes if you plan to exchange currency. Tips are appreciated and we suggest amounts in your trip pack.
Connectivity
Buy a local SIM at the airport with your passport. Coverage is good along the Karakoram Highway and absent in places like Fairy Meadows and parts of Chapursan.
Note that foreign SIM roaming in Gilgit-Baltistan is restricted, so a local SIM genuinely matters.
What to expect
Expect hospitality that can feel overwhelming, long driving days, unpredictable weather in the mountains, and dress standards that are more modest than at home for both men and women.
